If you're looking to increase your physical activity, there's no shortage of options out there for you.

Yoga, dance, pilates, run, walk, sports.

All are great for getting your heart rate up and challenging your body to move in different ways.

The one glaring omission from the list above? Strength training. Still neglected by a large percentage of the population, I believe strength training is one of the best ways for someone to improve their health. This is why we've chosen to expand our business to include personal training!

Our take on Strength Training

For us at Union, strength training is all-encompassing. It's not just a means to build muscle and lose weight, but a way to help improve our mobility, make daily living easier and reduce pain. That means we train with these major concepts in mind:

  • Movement in different planes and shapes (Squat, Lunge, Hinge, Carry, Push, Pull)

  • Training through a full range of motion

  • We train through discomfort, but never pain

  • Train for power

  • Have a regression for everything

Put simply- express your full pain-free joint range of motion as often as possible through different planes, don't forget to train power, and make it easier when needed. These concepts make up the foundation of our programming.

Why Should I Hire a Trainer?

I won't lie here.

If you have a decent grasp of training concepts, are training in different planes, are giving attention to a variety of movements and have no trouble holding yourself accountable for going to the gym, then you might not need to hire a trainer to achieve your goals.

Hiring a trainer can be helpful if:

  • you're new to working out and need help getting started

  • you're having trouble progressing

  • you need to navigate around an old injury

  • you need help with accountability/ showing up

A trainer can design a program centered around your goals and movement history, and can help by holding you accountable for showing up and putting in the work.

Education

One key piece of our training is that we never want our clients to feel like they lack the competency to go out and train on their own.

There are no secrets here; we try to educate our clients as much as possible about exercise selection and programming so that ultimately they have the confidence to hit the gym on their own. There's nothing wrong with working with a trainer forever if you enjoy it, but we never want any of our clients to feel like they can't succeed without us.
